ADHD assessment

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about online ADHD assessments, previous diagnoses, collateral history and treatment planning.

What if I do not have anyone from my primary school years who can attend the second appointment?

This interview is required for all ADHD assessments. If you do not have anyone who can attend, it may be worth looking into other clinics, as AOA Clinic is unable to complete a thorough assessment without this interview. Primary school reports can also be a helpful additional resource.

I have been diagnosed with ADHD previously. What are my options?

We recommend asking your psychiatrist or paediatrician to write a letter to your local GP to transfer your care. This may save you a reassessment, as your local GP may be able to implement the treatment plan from your psychiatrist. At AOA Clinic, all patients are transferred back to their local GP once stabilised on medication. If you choose to be seen at AOA Clinic, a reassessment will be required regardless of whether you are currently taking medication.

I have been diagnosed with ADHD by a psychologist. I am now looking for medication.

All patients require an independent medical assessment at AOA Clinic to evaluate for physical and mental health conditions that may cause executive dysfunction before a psychiatrist treatment plan can be made to determine whether medication has a role.

How do I choose a reputable online clinic for ADHD treatment in Australia?

Look for qualified medical practitioners, clear assessment processes, transparent pricing and ongoing follow-up care. Reputable clinics should explain how assessments are completed, whether Medicare rebates may apply and how treatment decisions are made.

How do online ADHD assessments work?

Online ADHD assessments are usually completed through telehealth appointments with Australian-registered healthcare practitioners. The process may include medical history review, structured assessment tools, collateral information and follow-up appointments to discuss diagnosis and treatment options.

What should I look for in an ADHD telehealth clinic?

Important factors include practitioner qualifications, transparent fees, structured assessment processes, confidentiality, personalised communication and ongoing support options. It is also important to check whether the clinic initiates medication or whether you need a local GP willing to do so.

What are the steps involved in getting an ADHD diagnosis through telehealth in Australia?

The process usually involves several appointments. This may include reviewing medical history, completing structured assessment tools, discussing symptoms and daily functioning, and attending follow-up appointments to review assessment outcomes and treatment recommendations. Some clinics may also request collateral information from someone familiar with your childhood history.

Where can I find online clinics in Australia that offer ADHD assessments and treatment?

Many Australian clinics now provide ADHD assessment and treatment services through telehealth. When choosing an online clinic, look for Australian-registered practitioners, clear assessment processes, transparent pricing and ongoing follow-up care. You may also wish to check whether Medicare rebates apply and whether appointments are available nationwide.

Do I need neuropsychological testing before seeing a psychiatrist?

No. For most adults, ADHD can be assessed through a comprehensive clinical evaluation without neuropsychological testing. If your assessment identifies concerns such as learning disorders, intellectual disability or significant brain injury, your clinician may recommend additional testing. At AOA Clinic, clinicians focus on understanding why you are struggling, not simply whether you meet criteria for ADHD.

Can ASD contribute to executive dysfunction?

Yes. Executive dysfunction can occur in ADHD, ASD, anxiety, burnout, trauma, sleep problems and other conditions. If ASD appears clinically relevant during your assessment, you can have further diagnostic clarification with the same psychiatrist in another appointment.

Can a GP assess ADHD?

In Australia, GPs may play an important role in the ADHD assessment process. A GP may review medical history, assess symptoms, coordinate referrals and assist with ongoing care. Diagnosis and treatment planning may also involve a psychiatrist, depending on the model of care and individual clinical needs.

What is involved in an ADHD assessment?

An ADHD assessment may involve review of current symptoms, medical and mental health history, childhood history, daily functioning, structured assessment tools and collateral information where appropriate. The exact process can vary depending on the clinic, practitioner and individual circumstances.

Can ADHD be assessed online?

ADHD may be assessed through telehealth where clinically appropriate. Online assessments usually involve secure video appointments, review of relevant history, structured assessment processes and follow-up appointments to discuss findings and treatment recommendations.

Do adults need a referral for an ADHD assessment?

Referral requirements vary depending on the clinic, practitioner and Medicare rebate pathway. Some services may allow patients to book directly, while others may require a GP referral. Patients should check the clinic's referral and rebate requirements before booking.
