Executive dysfunction vs ADHD
Executive dysfunction is not always ADHD.
Difficulties with focus, organisation, motivation, memory and follow-through can occur in ADHD, but they can also arise from burnout, anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep problems, hormonal changes, medical conditions and other factors.
Book an Executive Function AssessmentWhat is executive dysfunction?
Executive dysfunction refers to difficulty with the mental skills that help you plan, organise, start tasks, manage time, regulate emotions, remember information and follow through on intentions.
People often describe it as knowing what they need to do, but feeling unable to start, prioritise, sustain focus or complete tasks consistently.
Common signs of executive dysfunction
Task initiation
Difficulty starting tasks until pressure, urgency or panic appears.
Organisation
Struggling with planning, paperwork, routines, appointments or life admin.
Attention and memory
Losing track, forgetting details, rereading information or jumping between tasks.
Emotional regulation
Feeling overwhelmed, reactive, frustrated or unable to recover after stress.
ADHD can cause executive dysfunction
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that usually begins in childhood. Many people with ADHD experience longstanding difficulties with attention, impulsivity, organisation, time management and emotional regulation.
But executive dysfunction has many causes
Similar symptoms can occur with anxiety, depression, burnout, trauma, sleep disruption, chronic pain, hormonal changes, medication effects, substance use, medical conditions and other mental health conditions.

Why a checklist is not enough
Many people can identify with ADHD symptoms, especially during periods of stress, burnout, sleep deprivation or emotional overload. A careful assessment asks a more important question: what is causing the symptoms?
At AOA Clinic, clinicians assess ADHD in the context of the whole person, including developmental history, current functioning, mental health, sleep, medical factors and life circumstances.
They do not simply ask: “Do you have ADHD?”
They ask: “Why are you struggling?”
Understand what is driving your symptoms
The Executive Function Assessment is designed to clarify ADHD and other causes of attention, organisation, motivation and productivity difficulties.
